What is an SR-22 in Texas?

An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility filed to show that the required liability insurance is in place. Your insurance card and your SR-22 serve different purposes. Showing a card does not necessarily satisfy a DPS filing requirement.

The Texas Department of Public Safety explains when the certificate is needed and how it relates to your driving record.

The policy provides the insurance. The filing provides the state's required evidence. Both need to be correct.

Choose coverage based on whether you own a vehicle

You own, finance, or lease a car

Start with an auto policy covering that car. Review the liability limits and the additional protection you want. When a lender or lease is involved, check its comprehensive, collision, and deductible requirements too.

You don't own a car

Texas recognizes that a driver can need SR-22 proof without owning a vehicle. A non-owner policy may be available, subject to eligibility and vehicle-access conditions.

If you regularly drive a household vehicle or a car owned by someone else, say so. The right arrangement may differ from an occasional-borrowing situation.

Explore non-owner coverage.

What are the Texas liability minimums?

Texas requires at least 30/60/25 in auto liability coverage.

Liability protection Minimum limit
Bodily injury to one person $30,000
Bodily injury to multiple people in an accident $60,000 total
Property damage in an accident $25,000

Liability coverage addresses covered injuries or property damage you are legally responsible for—not every expense from every accident. Comprehensive and collision address covered damage to your own vehicle. Other policy options and applicable state requirements also deserve review.

The Texas Department of Insurance auto guide explains these distinctions in more detail.

How long does Texas require SR-22?

Texas DPS describes a two-year obligation tied to the applicable conviction or judgment. Your driving record and the reason for the requirement determine the dates that matter.

Do not automatically count two years from the day you buy a policy. And don't assume that moving, changing cars, or buying a six-month policy ends the state's requirement.

Before removing a filing, confirm the obligation is satisfied. Other requirements on your record may still need attention.

How much does Texas SR-22 insurance cost?

Your quote depends on your driver information, coverage, vehicle, location, and other applicable rating factors. A number published for another state or a different driver does not establish your Texas price.

Ask for the full picture: amount due today, installment schedule, total policy cost, limits, deductibles, and any separate filing charge.

You can use our cost guide to understand the difference between a filing fee and the insurance premium. The fee to submit a certificate is not the price of the policy itself.

What happens after you request a quote?

We review the information needed for your situation. You review the coverage and payment terms. Once the insurance transaction is completed and the necessary filing arranged, confirm the policy effective date and the filing details.

Then DPS must process and apply the information. The DPS SR-22 FAQs advise that processing can take up to 21 business days. That is state processing—not a promise about the time needed to prepare a quote.

Check your official eligibility and remaining requirements before driving. Insurance coverage is not an occupational license or a substitute for a court order.

Texas SR-22 questions

Can I get an SR-22 without owning a vehicle?

Potentially. Tell us about the vehicles you own or regularly use so eligibility for a non-owner policy can be reviewed.

Does a regular insurance card satisfy DPS?

Not when DPS specifically requires an SR-22 certificate. Confirm that the required filing was arranged, not just that you received an ID card.

Is the reinstatement charge included in my insurance payment?

Do not assume so. State charges and insurance charges are separate items unless a specific arrangement clearly says otherwise. Follow the state's payment instructions for the record requirement.

Can I cancel the policy if I stop driving?

Stopping driving does not automatically end a filing obligation. Confirm the state's requirement first and ask about the coverage appropriate to your current situation.

Can I get coverage if I moved to Texas but another state requires proof?

That needs an out-of-state filing review. Tell us both states before buying. See the out-of-state guide.
