Get the right coverage—not just a form

An SR-22 is proof of insurance filed with the BMV. The policy behind it still needs to fit your vehicle, your driving, and your coverage needs.

If you own a car, start with coverage for that car. If you don't, a non-owner policy may be available, depending on your eligibility and access to other vehicles. A vehicle you borrow every day is important information, even if it belongs to someone else.

Does your notice ask for SR-22 or proof of past coverage?

Those are different requests.

An SR-22 documents qualifying insurance going forward. A Certificate of Compliance, or COC, addresses insurance for a particular incident date and vehicle. Buying insurance today cannot create coverage for an earlier uninsured incident.

Read the notice before assuming one form will solve both problems. The Indiana BMV's proof-of-financial-responsibility page explains the distinction.

Not sure which one you need? Compare SR-22, SR-50, and COC requirements.

How long is Indiana's SR-22 requirement?

For insurance suspensions, current Indiana BMV guidance describes maintaining SR-22 coverage for 180 consecutive days to satisfy the applicable requirement.

That is not a blanket rule for every court order, specialized driving privilege, or other condition on a driver's record. It also does not mean you can stop meeting ordinary insurance requirements after day 180.

Check the reason for your suspension and the conditions shown on your own record. Read the detailed Indiana requirements guide.

What does Indiana coverage include?

The state's basic auto liability minimums are 25/50/25.

Liability coverage State minimum
Bodily injury to one person $25,000
Bodily injury to multiple people in one accident $50,000 total
Property damage in one accident $25,000

The liability numbers do not describe an entire policy. Indiana's uninsured- and underinsured-motorist rules, available options, and any signed selections or rejections also matter. The Indiana Department of Insurance explains those protections.

For a vehicle you own, comprehensive and collision are separate coverages for covered damage to the car. A lender or lease can require them even when the SR-22 requirement itself does not.

How much does Indiana SR-22 insurance cost?

Your quote depends on the coverage, driver information, location, vehicle, and other applicable rating factors. A published price for another driver is not your price.

Instead of focusing only on a monthly number, check what is due to start and what remains payable over the policy term.

Question to ask What you should be able to see
How much do I need today? Initial payment and any separately disclosed required charges
What are my later payments? Amount, number, and due dates of installments
What does the policy cover? Coverage types, limits, deductibles, and important restrictions
Is the filing included? How the required certificate is arranged and whether a separate charge applies

Our Indiana SR-22 cost guide helps you compare payment choices without confusing a filing charge with the price of insurance.

What to have ready for a quote

Bring your BMV notice or a clear description of the requirement, your driver information, and details about any vehicles you own or use. If you currently have insurance, the declarations page helps identify the coverage and effective dates.

Tell us about a move, a different state requesting proof, a financed vehicle, or regular use of a household car. These details can change which coverage is appropriate.

You don't need to know every insurance term. You do need to give accurate information.

From quote to BMV record

Start by requesting a quote. Review the coverage, effective date, and payment details. Once the insurance transaction is completed and the required filing is arranged, confirm that the submission was made with the correct driver information.

The next step belongs to the BMV: processing the filing and determining whether the applicable requirements are satisfied. A successful submission receipt is not the same as a valid license.

Other reinstatement conditions can remain. Review the BMV's reinstatement guidance and check your record before driving.

Questions Indiana drivers ask

Can I get SR-22 coverage without a vehicle?

A non-owner policy may be an option. Eligibility depends on your situation, including whether you own a vehicle or regularly have access to one. See Indiana non-owner coverage.

Is a COC the same as an insurance card?

No. The BMV requires the appropriate proof for the situation described in its request. A card showing current coverage does not by itself establish that a specific vehicle was insured on an earlier date.

Do I still need SR-50?

SR-50 appears in older material, but the BMV says it stopped requiring that form beginning July 1, 2013. An old notice or record may need individual review. Don't purchase something based on outdated terminology alone.

Can I cancel after 180 days?

Confirm that the relevant filing obligation is satisfied and check for any other requirements first. You still need applicable auto insurance for a car you own or drive. A six-month policy term and 180 consecutive days are not automatically the same calculation.
