Start with the reason you need a filing
Ohio financial-responsibility requirements are not identical for every driver. A non-compliance suspension, an older action on your record, or another kind of reinstatement requirement can lead to different instructions.
Bring the notice or check your BMV record before choosing a policy based on a general “three years of SR-22” statement.
For non-compliance cases, the Ohio BMV's current guidance distinguishes newer requirements from certain older ones. That distinction can change how long proof must remain on file.
Is Ohio's SR-22 requirement one year or longer?
For the non-compliance suspensions described in current BMV guidance, the proof period is generally one year. Specified actions added to the driving record before April 9, 2025 can retain a three-year or five-year requirement.
The older rules depend on the record and offense history. These are not interchangeable choices, and the one-year rule is not a universal rule for every Ohio suspension.
The safest question is: What proof period applies to the specific action on my record? Confirm that before planning a cancellation date.
Coverage for drivers with a car
An auto policy should identify the vehicle you own and include the necessary coverage. Ohio's basic liability minimums are 25/50/25.
| Coverage | Minimum liability limit |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury to one person | $25,000 |
| Bodily injury to multiple people in one accident | $50,000 total |
| Property damage in one accident | $25,000 |
These are liability limits—not a promise to repair your car after an accident. Comprehensive and collision are separate coverages. A lender or lease may require them.
See Ohio's mandatory-insurance guidance and compare coverage choices.
What if I don't own a car?
A non-owner policy may be appropriate for an eligible driver who still needs to maintain a filing. Tell us about any vehicle you own, lease, or regularly use before selecting this option.
Non-owner liability coverage is not the same as physical-damage protection for a borrowed car. It also isn't a way to avoid properly insuring a vehicle you own.
What does “SR-22 bond” mean?
You may hear “bond” used when people discuss Ohio proof of financial responsibility. The BMV recognizes specified forms of proof, but an insurance policy and a financial-responsibility bond are not automatically the same product or the same protection.
When you request a quote here, be clear about whether you're looking for auto insurance with an SR-22 filing. Don't assume a product covers a vehicle or a loss just because someone calls it a bond.
We explain the insurance coverage in the quote. Any separate bond option would need its own eligibility and terms confirmed.
How much will my Ohio coverage cost?
Your price depends on the actual risk and coverage—not simply the fact that an SR-22 is required. Driver information, vehicle details, address, limits, and applicable discounts can affect the quote.
Compare the amount due today with the remaining installments and the total for the policy term. A small initial payment does not automatically mean a lower total cost.

Have these details ready
Your driver information, the state requiring proof, the reason shown on the notice, and the vehicle information are useful starting points. If you have current insurance, keep its effective dates and coverage details available.
A recent move or a current filing in another state should be mentioned before a new policy is issued.
After the filing: check the result
A policy purchase does not by itself clear a BMV record. Confirm the required proof was submitted and then confirm what the BMV shows for your driving status.
A mismatch in driver information, an older requirement, or a separate hold can affect what happens next. Do not drive based only on an insurance receipt.
Ohio SR-22 questions
I had insurance on the date listed in the notice. Do I need a new policy?
First review the BMV's instructions for supplying proof that was valid on that date. Current insurance cannot change the facts of an earlier incident, and a new purchase may not be the missing item.
Can I remove the filing after one year?
Only after confirming that the one-year requirement actually applies to you and has been completed. Certain older non-compliance cases and other record actions can be different.
Does SR-22 cover every car I drive?
No blanket promise applies. The policy's insured vehicles, eligible drivers, coverage terms, and exclusions control—not the SR-22 label.
Can I get a quote before my license is reinstated?
You can request a quote and explain your situation. Eligibility must be confirmed, and driving still requires valid privileges and appropriate coverage.
